Abstract:
These data were removed from the State Library web site in 2009 when newer data became available.

These data are locations in the Upper Clark Fork Basin where wildlife were seen during aerial surveys conducted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) between 1984 and 2003. The aerial surveys were conducted annually to count and classify wildlife in the area. Most of the observation layers are accompanied by polygon layers created by buffering the observations by 1000 feet. There are also polygon coverages giving the estimated winter ranges of moose and whitetailed deer.

The data consist of layers with different observation types: Mule Deer, Winter 1991-2003; Mule Deer, Spring 1998-2003; Mountain Goats, 1993-1996; Elk, Winter 1984-2002; Bighorn Sheep, Winter 1988-2001; Moose, Winter 1998-2004; and Antelope 1995-2001.

Each observation record has attribute fields for the number of animals seen, the date, and counts of the types of animals, such as males, females and juveniles.

The data are not intended to represent overall or annual distribution. Each individual observation represents one or more animals. Density of observations does not necessarily equal density of animals.
Purpose:
To provide wildlife data for use in the Natural Resource Damage Program (NRDP). The data is intended to aid in NRDP project planning and implementation by identifying key wildlife habitats.

Data are used by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in their management responsibilities to set hunting seasons, determine population trends, and identify critical habitats. Observations were recorded on data forms and locations either plotted on USFS Maps (Deerlodge National Forest) or recorded by specific location.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
Excellent. Data was collected and digitized by the same local Biologist. Data was digitized on 1:100,000 Bureau of Land Management maps.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: The data were digitized on 1:100,000 BLM maps.

Lineage:

Process step:
FWP field data observation forms from 1984 thru 2003 and maps were used to identify GIS locations on BLM 1:100,000 maps. Data was digitized on screen using ArcView 3.2 using the following 1:100,000 scale Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) as base maps (Missoula East, Elliston, Philipsburg, Butte North, and Butte South). The DRGs were obtained from the Natural Resource Information System at http://nris.mt.gov/gis/.
